Instructional Design for SMEs
Many organizations do not want to spend money to staff a Learning and Development department with instructional design professionals. Rather than spending money on what they might consider "overhead", they prefer to spend their money on their core business. Therefore, increasingly in today's organizations, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are being asked to design and develop courses. Although SMEs are, by definition, experts in their subject domain, they often have little knowledge or skills in designing or developing instructional programs. In recent years many software tools that make developing instructional programs far easier than they once were have entered the market. Nevertheless, with no knowledge or skills in the other parts of the instructional design and development process, individuals using these new software tools often develop instructional programs that fail to achieve the desired results.
Instructional Design for SMEs provides a foundational overview of adult learning. It then covers the basics for each phase of the instructional design process. It provides SMEs with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to do each step of the process. Although some SMEs may only do one or two steps, having a working knowledge and basic skills in each step will benefit them. Instructional Design for SMEs is a classroom-based, instructor-led workshop. It is light on jargon. It puts instructional design concepts in everyday terms easily understood by those who are not professional instructional designers. It includes theory only when necessary to illustrate and inform relevant concepts. It also provides multiple practice opportunities to put those concepts into action.
